We invite you to delight in the breathtaking crocus displays that sweep across our lawns and meadows. Following the snowdrops of February, acres of naturalised crocuses (Crocus vernus and Crocus tommasinianus) emerge, lining the pathways and carpeting the grass with their open, chalice-shaped blooms.
The earliest record of Crocus vernus at the Abbey dates back more than a century. Over time, these crocuses have self-sown and become beautifully established throughout our 30 acres of gardens and meadows. Each year, we carefully introduce a few more to areas that need a little lift, and the results continue to delight. This seasonal spectacle also provides a vital early source of nectar, drawing pollinators out to bask in the spring sunshine.
Elsewhere in the garden, wild daffodils (Narcissus lobularis), drifts of Lenten roses (Helleborus x hybridus), splashes of Chionodoxa and winter-flowering shrubs will all be at their finest. Join us for a leisurely stroll among the vibrant carpets of crocus.
